Paige Chwalek, 18
Quads, Huron Valley Percussion
Quads, Huron Valley Percussion
Paige's journey into the world of music began unconventionally, as she entered the realm of marching band not through traditional channels, but through the color guard. Despite lacking prior musical experience, Paige's determination and passion propelled her forward on an extraordinary path.
Transitioning from sports like softball and wrestling to the intricacies of music, Paige found herself drawn to the awe-inspiring drumline. Undeterred by her lack of formal training, she embarked on a self-directed education, utilizing online resources and sheer determination to learn the fundamentals of percussion.
A pivotal moment came when Paige seized the opportunity to join Huron Valley Percussion (HVP) during the winter season, under the mentorship of Anna Koh, herself a Nick Saputo Scholarship recipient in 2019. This experience marked the beginning of Paige's growth as a percussionist, culminating in her achievement of becoming a quad player in her senior year — a testament to her perseverance and skill.
Paige credits her instructors at HVP, particularly Zach Desjarlais, for their guidance and support in her musical journey.
"Since starting in percussion, she has taught herself how to achieve so much all on her own," Zach said in a recommendation letter for Paige. "During this process, I have witnessed Paige get knocked down and bruised, only to get back up better and stronger every single time. No challenge is truly too big for Paige and she always goes above and beyond."
And Paige's impact extends beyond the confines of her musical pursuits, resonating with aspiring musicians and younger students who look up to her with admiration.
Her aspirations extend to DCI as well, with dreams of joining prestigious drum corps such as the Blue Stars or Blue Coats.
Paige's unwavering commitment to her craft, coupled with her resilience and passion, make her an ideal recipient of the Nick Saputo Scholarship. We are so excited to watch you excel in percussion performance for years to come, Paige!

Delinna Ramos, 19

Cymbals, Fruitport Independent
Delinna Ramos, a resilient and determined individual with a captivating smile, is our third and final recipient of the Nick Saputo Scholarship for 2024. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Delinna's childhood was marked by adversity and responsibility far beyond her years.
Before this year with Fruitport Independent, Delinna had never picked up a musical instrument to play.
Her journey took a transformative turn when her boyfriend introduced her to the world of music and performance through Fruitport and WGI. Despite her lack of musical background, Delinna's courage and confidence propelled her to audition for Fruitport, marking the beginning of a remarkable musical journey.
Her cymbal coordinator at Fruitport, Olivia Muller said it best: "From the first audition, I knew that her not having prior knowledge wouldn’t matter because of the way she carried herself in the auditions and the strong desire and excitement she showed to learn how to read and play music."
In addition to her musical pursuits, Delinna is a full-time student at Grand Valley State University, majoring in diagnostic medical sonography as a first-generation student.
Delinna's resilience, perseverance, and commitment to personal growth make her a deserving recipient of the Nick Saputo Scholarship. We are so excited to continue to watch you grow and flourish in your amazing musical journey, Delinna!

Clark Floer, 21
Motor City Percussion, Front Ensemble
Motor City Percussion, Front Ensemble
In the past 10 years, Clark has brought his musical talents to several different musical ensembles. He has been involved with West Bloomfield Percussion (2013-2019), Motor City Percussion (2018, 2022-2023), Crossmen (2019-2020), Rhythm X (2020), Lake Effect Percussion (teaching), and the Cavaliers (2023). During that time, Clark has experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, including when the 2020 season was suddenly brought to a halt. A devastating blow for everyone in the circuit. "Through this, I have escaped through music along the way learning that it’s not all about the notes, but the memories we compose," he wrote in his application essay.
Clark is willing to go to all lengths to achieve his musical aspirations. He even bought a hearse so he could fit an eight-foot marimba in the back. Clark will use his 2023 scholarship funds to help him march the the Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corp for his age out year this summer. We wish him the very best of luck in his future endeavors!

Eleni Batsios, 21
Redline Percussion, Front Ensemble
Eleni's musical journey started at the early age of 4 years old as she tackled the same instrument Nick did as a child: The piano. With regular practice, Eleni says it was that discipline and drive that helped set her up for what was to come in her future. She was playing Mozart in Middle School, under the instruction of a teacher who encouraged her to "feel the music and the emotion," something she still strives for today. Eleni is the true definition of a musician and leader.
She plans to use her scholarship funds to perform with Cap City World.
We are so happy to welcome you into our winners circle, Eleni! All the best for the future!

Italia Jefferson, 20
Italia Jefferson is a true warrior. Now in her third season with Redline, Italia has worked tirelessly, proving her dedication as a player and a performer. Italia's recommendation letters were glowing, describing a young person that leads by example and shows up prepared for every rehearsal.
"I have been constantly impressed and made better by working with Italia Jefferson," said Redline frontline director George Stuteville of Italia's work ethic.
Italia has faced numerous setbacks along her journey but has never failed to keep pushing -- and doing it all with a smile on her face. Italia currently performs in the front ensemble of Redline percussion, one of the best performing winterlines in all of Michigan. We are so proud of you, Italia, and can't wait to see you continue to grow as a percussionist!

2021 Nick Saputo scholarship winner
The 2020-2021 marching season was another difficult one for our friends in the competitive marching arts. Again, the pandemic has made everything different. But we wanted to make sure that we were still able to help a student continue to pursue their dreams in marching arts. Thank you so much to our amazingly generous donors that allow us to keep this scholarship possible, year after year. We truly couldn't do it without you.
This year we reached a decision to help a candidate whose application in 2020 really spoke to us. So we're thrilled to announce our 2021 winner:

Jamis Coates, 21
Snare
Redline Percussion, Carolina Crown Drum & Bugle Corps
Redline Percussion, Carolina Crown Drum & Bugle Corps
Jamis Coates is currently a student at Eastern Michigan University, paying his way through college and maintaining a 40-hour-per-week job. During his "free" time, he's been rehearsing and practicing for his position in the snare line at Redline Percusion, and their show was just recently released for online viewing. It's nothing like any of the winterline shows of the past due to COVID-19, but they pulled off an incredible virtual show that is just as exciting. Check it out below.
In the coming summer, Jamis will be spending much of his summer playing snare with the Carolina Crown, a world class drum and bugle corp based in Fort Mill, South Carolina. It requires an incredible amount of talent to get a position in this group. Their 2021 show will be "In My Mind" by James Taylor.

2020 Winners
Lauren Strager, 19
Snare
Redline Percussion, Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps
Lauren Strager, 19
Snare
Redline Percussion, Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps
Lauren Strager has fought hard to be in the position she's in. She worked tirelessly to be much more than "just a girl" in a fiercely male-dominated position: the snareline. "I want to be the woman that little girls look up to when they feel that they do not belong in this activity," she said. Lauren's glowing recommendation letters spoke not only of her incredible work ethic, but of her heartfelt compassion for others that might be struggling. Lauren works hard to fundraise for her winterline and drum corps seasons and plans to go to school full-time to pursue Political Science Prelaw as well as Public Policy. We're so excited to see what the future holds for you, Lauren.
Brooklyn Simpson, 21
Cymbals
Redline Percussion, Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps
Cymbals
Redline Percussion, Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps
Brooklyn should be gearing up to march his age-out year this summer with the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corp. But like Lauren, the COVID-19 crisis put a stop to the entire DCI summer season. We're hopeful he will get another shot to march next summer. Brooklyn, a Walled Lake Central High School graduate, was faced with adversity through years of auditions and hard work. He has been a marching member, an instructor to high school students and is also the founder of Flashpoint - a company dedicated to providing resources for cymbal players to succeed. Ashley Miller, his instructor at Redline said this: "Brooklyn has brought a commitment of excellence, leadership, and innovation to Redline that has set him apart in the ensemble." We're so happy to have him in our circle of Nick Saputo Scholarship winners!
Kyla Molitierno, 19
Front Ensemble, Motor City Percussion
Front Ensemble, Motor City Percussion
Marching with Motor City Percussion has been a dream come true for Kyla. Her musical career and hard work have taken her in many directions, from marching quads in high school, to learning how to play cymbals to finally, landing in the front ensemble at Motor City Percussion, where she has flourished as a performer. "The possibilities for me to grow and get better within this activity both as an ensemble member and a musician seem endless," she wrote. Kyla hopes to march Drum Corp in the years ahead and we know she can do it. "Kyla is one of the most enthusiastic and energetic performers I have the pleasure of working with," EMU's Jason Ihnat said in a recommendation letter. Kyla is a Music Education major at Eastern Michigan University. We are thrilled to have her as a recipient of the Nick Saputo Scholarship!
We will be in touch with all of our 2020 recipients via email soon!
We also have plaques to present to them, but the circumstances didn't allow us to see them at State Finals.
We will make it happen once this uncertain time is over.

Sarah Chapman, 21
Front ensemble
Front ensemble
Sarah has grown up loving music, starting at the early age of 3, when she sat in front of a piano for the first time. Her passion over the years has helped her evolve into a startlingly fantasic musician -- but also a better person. Sarah spent her 2018-19 winterline season in the front ensemble of Divergent Performing Arts and hopes to spend her final season with one of the most talented winterlines in the county, Music City Mystique (based out of Nashville). It will take a lot of hard work, but Sarah is wholly committed to it and we know she can do it. After her performing days are over, she hopes to continue in the marching arts by teaching and perhaps creating a group of her own. Beyond her musical passions, Sarah has dreams of becoming an American Sign Language Interpreter. Congratulations to you Sarah! We're so excited to see what the future holds for you.
Nicholas Dobbins, 21
Snare, Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps
Snare, Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps
Nick Dobbins has a long history of musical accomplishments behind him. From his middle school ages to the present day, Nick has been incredibly active in the world of percussion, most recently, while balancing an education at the University of Michigan. In previous years, Nick has marched indoor with Lake Effect Percussion and Redline Percussion. Nick is spending his upcoming summer touring with the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corp. This is an incredible honor to get a position on the Scouts' snareline. Nick is also a fourth year member of the University of Michigan Marching Band. "Pushing yourself to limits you never thought you’d be able to achieve, the thousands of hours of practice, and the rush of performing is an experience unlike any other," Nick said in his application. We're in awe of everything he's already done and can't wait to see him performing this summer with the Scouts!
Anna Koh, 19
Cymbals, Redline Percussion
Cymbals, Redline Percussion
Anna Koh got her start in indoor percussion in 2014, albeit relunctantly, as a friend dragged her to an audition for the cymbal line in Farmington United Percussion Ensemble. She recalls that date as one that changed her life forever. She left a changed person -- with a new fire burning inside. Since then, she has pushed hard and hasn't let up when it comes to being the best possible performer and musician that she can be. Since 2017, she has spent her summers touring with Legends Drum & Bugle Corp. In her first season, a stress fracture on her femur put a sudden and sad end to her season that she spent months working on. But instead of going home, she stuck around, cheering for her team, even helping to serve meals to her peers from the food truck. She is now the section leader of the cymbal line at Legends, is marching her winter season with Redline Percussion and is also teaching at Huron Valley Percussion (where Nick once taught). We're so happy to add her to our wonderful roster of performers and can't wait to cheer her on for years to come.
2018 recipients:
Hunter Dejarlais, 20
Redline Percussion, Quads
Music and marching are like food and water for Hunter.
An avid performer, both indoor and with Drum Corp International, he has a long history in the percussion activity. As an eighth grader, he was marching indoor percussion and practically hasn't put down his (very heavy) tenor drums since. A true leader, he has improved with every season, initially inspired by his brother, Zach (a 2015 recipient of this scholarship). Hunter is always pushing to be better and has numerous accolades and awards to show for it. Instructor Amber McCausland gets to see Hunter's passion firsthand: "If there is one thing I can confidently say about him, it’s the fact that he has a drive that is unlike many members," she said.
Hunter's drive is incredible. This summer, he'll spend his summer marching with one of the country's top drum corps, Phantom Regiment. It's a testament to his hard work and passion for the activity.
We're thrilled to welcome Hunter into the circle of incredibly dedicated performers that make up the recipients of the Nick Saputo Scholarship.

Patrick Rupp, 18
Redline Percussion, Front Ensemble
When Patrick auditioned for Redline Percussion, he wasn't really expecting to make it. He had no prior indoor percussion experience and Redline was a big starting point. But thanks to an incredible work ethic and true skill, Patrick achieved his goal. He has now marched two seasons with Redline and has stepped up as a leader within the group. Patrick's tech, Denise Martaus, says Patrick sets a great example as a veteran member. "As his instructor I can consistently rely on him to step up to the plate as a performer, leader, and representative of the organization," she said. Equally as exciting, Patrick auditioned and was accepted into Legends Drum & Bugle Corp, where he'll perform in the front ensemble for the 2018 DCI season. Patrick's love for music and performance is truly very special and we look forward to watching him grow in the activity. Congratulations, Patrick!

Grishok Thayanithy, 18
Motor City Percussion, Bass drum
Motor City Percussion, Bass drum
Grishok is a musician in every sense of the word. From marching band to pit orchestra to jazz band to choir, it's that passion for performance that gives him a reason to get up every morning. But it was winter drum line that truly spurred his love for percussion. "It brought me joy that all my other activities did but in magnitudes that were unparalleled," Grishok said in his scholarship application.
In addition to being a leader within Motor City Percussion, Grishok is already sharing his knowledge with future performers, teaching students at his alma mater, Dakota High School. He hopes to continue marching winter drumline and possibly take on a summer of drum corp. We are so proud to celebrate this awesome award with you, Grishok! You are so deserving and we look forward to cheering you on in the years ahead!

2017 winners:
Machlain Anderson, 17
Walled Lake Central Percussion, Front Ensemble
Music is the driving force in Machlain "Mac" Anderson's life. At a mere 17 years old, Mac is already going places many people his age can only dream of. An extremely gifted member of Walled Lake Percussion's front ensemble, Mac is much more than simply a percussionist; he's a leader, a performer and everything you could hope for in a recipient of the Nick Saputo Memorial Scholarship.
Mac will graduate from high school this year and plans to attend Oakland University in the fall as a music education major. Before that, he'll spend the long, hot days of summer with the world-class Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corp. It will be his second summer touring with the group. This year, he will have the added responsibility of section leader. This is no small feat for anyone, let alone someone his age.
When it comes to leading a group to success, Mac says playing the notes simply isn't enough. "It takes consistent cooperative motivation to be able to love what you are doing while doing what you love at the highest level," he wrote in his scholarship application.
We look forward to cheering on Mac this summer and feeling a bit of pride that in some way, this scholarship helped him get there. Congratulations Mac!

Trisha Beauchemin, 18
Motor City Percussion, Cymbals Trisha Beauchemin embodies persistence. As a high school freshman, she witnessed a winter line performance and, despite her lack of experience, decided then and there she had to do that. She dropped her clarinet and eventually made her way into her high school's drumline. From there, she faced obstacles - internal and external - but persisted. Her drive to be the best she can possibly be is nothing short of inspiring. |
Trisha has now performed three full seasons with Motor City Percussion and in addition, is a psychology major at Eastern Michigan University, where she is a member of the marching band. She also has a passion for teaching, and has taken on a position as a cymbal tech with West Bloomfield Percussion.
"I live and breathe for this activity and I cannot imagine putting any less than my whole self, heart and soul into every show, every group and place that I perform," Trisha said in her application essay. It is, undoubtedly, that attitude and passion for performance that has brought her so far in her percussion career - and convinced us that she is the perfect recipient of the Nick Saputo Scholarship. We can't wait to see Trisha continue to grow in her skills while also passing along her knowledge to other young students. Congratulations Trisha! |
Aaron Meissner, 18
Redline Percussion, Snare For Aaron Meissner, a life devoted to music is about much more than simply notes on a page. It's the people you're with, the shared goal within a group and the feeling of inclusion. His love for the group and passion for performance keeps pushing him to achieve big things. Aaron began his winter line career playing snare with Ferndale Independent Percussion. He quickly graduated to a world class group, Redline Percussion. |
The accomplishment thrilled his former instructor, Danny Chunn. "I could not have been more proud," Chunn said.
Aaron is not only a member of Redline Percussion, he also excels at academics; he attends the University of Michigan, where he's a member of the marching band. He also enjoys sharing his time with his church family and performing community service. Once he ages out, Aaron hopes to continue his work: "I would love to teach kids," he said. "I truly believe that this activity changes lives and is one of the best things out there for building traits such as leadership, dedication and teamwork." We're thrilled to welcome Aaron into an elite group of Michigan percussionists that have earned the Nick Saputo Memorial Scholarship. Congratulations Aaron! |
2016 Scholarship Recipients
Powerful words, yes. But it isn't until you see Chyenne perform that you realize, DANG, this girl isn't messing around! She has a drive that pushes her to the extremes both physically and mentally -- but she does it with a fire in her that is so obvious when she takes the floor to perform. She may be a tiny little thing -- but she has big dreams, a big smile and an extremely bright future.
We are so thrilled to have Chyenne among our scholarship recipients this year. Congratulations and best of luck in your musical journey! |
Chyenne Alvarado, 20
Cymbals, Legends Percussion A life-altering experience. That's how Chyenne describes her years of marching, practicing, and performing.
Those were the words she used when she sat down to write an essay on what made her, above anybody else, the best choice for the Nick Saputo scholarship. |
Michael Abel, 21
Snare, Northcoast Academy
Michael Abel, 21, of Lake Orion, has a passion for drumming that has been growing for years. He spent the past seven winter seasons, tirelessly perfecting the notes on the page until they were in sync with those around him. And just like the notes on the page, Michael's goals were also in sync with the musicians he was playing with, each and every day.

After aging out from Drum Corp International (DCI), he hopes to continue making his mark here in Michigan.
"I want to foster a healthy relationship between Michigan ensembles that promotes collaboration," he says. We're sure that we will be seeing Michael in the activity for many years to come and we look forward to cheering him along! Congratulations, Michael!

2015 Scholarship Recipients
In
a glowing letter of recommendation, Amber's instructor Beth Sample said: "Amber is one of the hardest working, committed members I have ever had the opportunity to educate. Her light hearted, yet somehow intense focus pushes her peers to better themselves and creates a more enjoyable atmosphere." We're thrilled to include Amber in our growing pool of
exceptional percussionists that have been awarded the Nick Saputo
Memorial Scholarship. Congratulations, Amber!

Amber McCausland, 21
Cymbals, Redline Percussion Amber is a fighter. She's been knocked down over after over, but gets up stronger and more determined every time. Like the title of Redline's show this year, she's "Unbreakable." It's that dedication that has brought her to Redline Percussion and Colts Drum & Bugle Corp. A relative late-comer to percussion performance, Amber didn't find her love of the art until she was a junior in high school. So she had to fight a little harder than most to get where she is. Now, she's ready to spend her summer marching with the Colts, working harder than ever before.

Zach Desjarlais, 19
Tenors, Farmington United Percussion Ensemble (FUPE) Zach is everything we look for in a potential candidate for the Nick Saputo Memorial Scholarship. He's got the drive, the determination and the dream to pursue music for years to come. A leader in his group, Zach is a role model to his peers and a model student to his instructors. In a letter of recommendation, a former instructor of Zach's said this: "Zach is somebody that anybody can look up to, and aspire to be like."

Zach was named "Most Improved Battery Member" for the 2012 and 2013 seasons with Farmington United. He also marched with Motor City Percussion and Legends Drum and Bugle Corp, where he will return again this summer for another season of intense rehearsals in the sun, day in and day out. And his passion doesn't go unnoticed. In a separate and equally glowing letter of recommendation, one instructor said this: "Zach is a very talented percussionist with a drive for perfection rarely witnessed by myself. His innate ability to empower those around him, while striving for goals both for himself and the group is unmatched." Congratulations, Zach! We're so proud of you!

Erin Thomson, 16
Bass drum, Ferndale Independent Percussion Erin has had the passion for performance since birth. Her mom was a dedicated winter guard performer and she grew up cheering from the sidelines. It's there that she learned the value of hard work and long hours. As she grew, her love for drumming started to develop and through hours of practice and rehearsal, she earned a spot on the bass line with Ferndale Independent.
|
In addition to her musical talent, she is also a member of the National Honor Society, Drama Club, among the top 10 in her class and writes for her school newspaper. In her essay, Erin's excitement for drumming is palpable: "I live for the stories I get to tell through music. I live for the family feeling I get from the group of people I meet from this activity. The fact that we all share a common interest gives me a chance to make lifelong friends who share my passion."
We are confident Erin will continue to shine in the activity for many years to come. Congratulations, Erin! VIDEO: Watch Ferndale Independent's 2015 show |

In his scholarship essay, Jacob wrote, "My past, present and future are revolved around music and I am working my hardest to become the best percussionist I can be."
Despite his extremely busy lifestyle, Jacob isn't planning to slow down anytime soon. He hopes to one day march Eastside Fury and Motor City Percussion Ensembles. After high school, he plans to attend Michigan State University and join their marching band. "I know these are big goals to have, but I have faith that I can achieve them through the passion and dedication that I put into my work," Jacob says. In his letters of recommendation, it's very clear that Jacob is a true leader -- willing to take on new responsibilities while driving others to excel. We want to congratulate Jacob on being awarded the Nick Saputo Memorial Scholarship! We look forward to watching him continue to pursue his dreams in music and beyond! |
Jacob Chludzinski, 16
Snare, Ferndale Independent Percussion He's just 16 years old, but Jacob Chludzinski has a resume in music and academia that is tough to rival at such a young age. And he's just getting started. From Student Government to Key Club to Men's A Capella for Autism and maintaining a 4.02 GPA, it's a miracle he has time to participate in what makes him the happiest: being a true musician.

But it's how she chooses to handle them that makes her special: using each as a life lesson, a chance to make herself a better person.
Amanda started her winter drumline experience marching bass drum at John Glenn High School and eventually moved to the cymbal line at Motor City Percussion. "Being a part of both of these ensembles... has taught me that far greater things can be achieved when working together rather than on your own, always push for your best, because you never know who will be willing to follow your example," Amanda wrote in her scholarship essay. In detailed and glowing letters of recommendation, those who have worked closest with Amanda talked about her musical gift, her incredibly demanding schedule and her dedication to each group she is affiliated with. We are thrilled to have Amanda as one of our 2014 recipients of the Nick Saputo Memorial Scholarship. |
Nothing can keep Amanda DeRosia from the busy, tough and physically demanding activity that is winter drumline.
As a seasoned veteran with 5 years of performing under her belt, it's clear that Amanda has faced her fair share of obstacles. |
Elizabeth Crandell, 20
Snare, Legends Drum & Bugle Corp Faster, farther, better. Those words jump off the pages of Elizabeth's scholarship essay. Her musical history includes playing piano, oboe, front ensemble and eventually, snare drum. But it wasn't an easy path getting there. Elizabeth, or 'Elly', as her friends call her, has worked extremely hard for everything she's achieved. Long hours of hard work, mentally intense training and a grueling schedule are just a few of the sacrifices she endured to achieve her dreams.
|
With just two years of drumming experience, Elizabeth auditioned for the Legends Indoor Percussion Ensemble and secured a spot as a snare player in a line of several of males with more experience. "I started out with nothing and took the effort and initiative to become a better drummer in the presence of much more experienced percussionists," Elizabeth wrote in her scholarship essay.
As for sacrifices, Elizabeth is willing to go above and beyond to become the best player possible. While attending Cornerstone University in 2013, she made the daily 100 mile round-trip commute from Grand Rapids to Western Michigan University in order to be in their marching band snare line. All for the love of drumming. Elizabeth will use her funds to march with Legends Drum & Bugle Corp, touring the country all summer, practicing and performing on a daily basis. We are so proud to award Elizabeth with the Nick Saputo Memorial Scholarship! |

"I just wanted to play the vibraphone because I enjoyed playing vibraphone and Eastside desperately needed a hole filled, so I went to a rehearsal on a whim and wound up signing my contract the very same day," Cassie explained. The rest is history. Since then she has pushed herself to the extremes: long rehearsals, heavy equipment and very little sleep, at times. But to Cassie, the two years of Eastside Fury and drum corp that she has left won't be enough. But Cassie has an answer for that: "I will teach until the day I die."
Cassie will use her scholarship to march this summer with The Academy Drum & Bugle Corp in Tempe, Arizona. She will tour the country all summer long, practicing endlessly and competing against other groups. We're so proud to present Cassie with this scholarship and can't wait to see her continue along her musical journey for years to come! |
Passion. Dedication. Camaraderie. Hard work. Perseverance. These are just a few words to sum up Cassie Reyna and her love for music. It started at just 8 years old, when she began playing violin. But it wasn't until her sophomore year of high school that she would pick up a pair of mallets. In 2012, she joined Eastside Fury with very little knowledge of the activity.

drumline, the Grand Blanc High School Wind Ensemble and most notably, he has been studying and performing with percussion ensembles from the Flint Institute of Music. This summer, he plans to use his scholarship money to march tenors with Legends Drum & Bugle Corp. "This will be the next step in developing my skills as a percussionist, as I plan to attend Michigan State after I graduate in 2014 and am hoping to be part of their percussion ensemble as well," Jacob wrote in his essay. And as if his dreams weren't big enough -- he hopes to march one day with The Cavaliers, one of the best drum corps in the country. We know you can do it all, Jacob! We're proud to present you with the Nick Saputo Memorial Scholarship!

Jacob Rechsteiner, 16
Tenor Drums, Legends Drum & Bugle Corp By his application essay alone, it's clear to us that Jacob is going places. In music and in life. A talented musician -- a leader -- a 4.0 GPA student -- and big dreams for the future. Jacob started playing piano when he was very young and then received his first drum set when he was 12 years old. He says that's when it all started. Since then, he has performed with the Grand Blanc High School winter |
named section leader of the front ensemble. To add to her huge new list of responsibilities -- all ten members of her section were also rookies. A daunting task, to say the least. "However, with my head held high... I had the best summer of my life. I learned so much about myself and how a strong leadership figure can take the most inexperienced of groups and make them into a powerful team," says Nicole. She knows the value of 'getting your hands dirty' and pushing for change...pushing for perfection. It's traits like these that made Nicole such an obvious choice to receive this scholarship. Your hard work, dedication and passion are an inspiration to us all. Congratulations on this award, Nicole!

Nicole Atkinson, 19
Front Ensemble, Legends Drum & Bugle Corp "People sometimes ask me 'Why do you give up all your weekends? All you do is rehearse.' That isn't true. I rehearse, I lead, I laugh till my sides hurt and best of all, I make a difference." These are the words Nicole used in her essay to talk about her indoor percussion experience. She gives 110% -- and helps others while she's doing it. In addition to indoor percussion, Nicole also marches with Legends Drum and Bugle Corp. Don't let her age -- or her shyness -- fool you. Morgan Zielke may be our youngest scholarship recipient ever, but she has drive and determination well beyond what you would expect from an eighth grade student. Morgan was our fourth scholarship winner this year. Every year, we try so hard to narrow down our list of winners to three. The process is painstaking. We want to help everyone. So it wasn't until the day of State Finals that we all decided -- we had to break our own rules. Morgan deserved this

scholarship just as much as the others and leaving her out felt wrong. Even though she's still in Middle School, Morgan has been marching with the Chippewa Valley High School winter drumline for two years now. Her experiences there and with the High School marching band have taught her some valuable lessons that she'll carry with her for many years to come. "I know what it is to be part of a team. As a group we can celebrate success together but we also have to accept complete failure together. When one person fails we all fail. With failure, though, comes growth." And as she continues to grow and learn more, Morgan has long term and short term plans for the future. In the short term, she's been practicing very hard to move to the snare drum. In the long term, she has dreams of marching with Northcoast Academy by the time she is 18 and hopes to march with The Cadets one day too, the drum corp where Nick aged-out."Percussion has become a huge part of my life and I'm never going to stop playing. I am so thankful that I got to start drumline so early because I want this experience to last forever," says Morgan. We're so happy to be able to give you this scholarship, Morgan. We know you're going to go far! Congratulations!

Kevin Levandoski
Snare, NorthCoast Academy Percussion Ensemble To Kevin, percussion isn't just a hobby or a way to fill the time. It's a way of life. He lives it and breathes it every day. With more than 6 years under his belt with the MCGC, WGI, and DCI circuits, Kevin knows the value of hard work. He spends his time as a member of Northcoast Academy during the winter months and has spent several of his summers touring the country with Drum & Bugle Corps like the Colts, Crossmen and finally this summer, for his age-out year... The Bluecoats. But his dedication doesn't stop there: he wants to teach, too. |
Currently attending Western Michigan University, Kevin is working to attain a degree in Music Education.
"It is without a doubt in my mind that Kevin will not only continue on his path to being a great artist and model citizen, but transition into becoming a well-respected and sought after instructor," said Northcoast Percussion Instructor, Tony Felder. We couldn't be prouder to name Kevin as a recipient of the Nick Alan Saputo Memorial Scholarship. Congratulations on your gold medal at MCGC State Finals and 6th place finish at WGI Finals! |
put down her roots with the Huron Valley family of percussionists.
In the upcoming 2012-2013 season, she'll spend her final year with HVP, and then has future goals of marching either Northcoast Academy or Eastside Fury. Our scholarship criteria required one letter of recommendation. Cara had three letters. No, Cara had three glowing letters that spoke of her passion, dedication and love for the art. One of them came from Rebekah Moeller, a former instructor of Cara's, who wrote about the depth of her impact. "Cara...she's one people will always smile about. Her ability to be there for everyone and make the environment a better place is unmatched; she makes the world a better place just by being who she is." Is there a higher compliment? Congratulations Cara, you truly deserve this award! (Not to mention that gold medal hanging around your neck!) |
Cara Matlis
Cymbals, Huron Valley Percussion Ensemble There are people in this world that tend to brighten a room without even trying. An effortless, distinct "glow" about them that sets them apart from the others. Ladies and gents, meet Cara Matlis. It's that infectious personality and zest for life that has undoubtedly helped her get to where she is today. As a junior in High School, Cara has spent three years marching with Huron Valley Percussion. During that time, she spent one year under Nick's direction and since then, has truly VIDEO: While we wait for the 2012 performance to be posted, check out this 2010 HVP performance. Years later, after hundreds of hours of practice, that same drive was the catalyst that sent Jackson to an Eastside Fury audition and landed him a spot among one of the most elite winter drumlines in the state of Michigan.
"Jackson brings a strong intellect to any ensemble he performs with, and a work ethic that has only been matched by a handful of students in my twenty years of teaching," says Michael Yoskovich, Chairman of the Fine Arts Department for North Farmington High School. And we can all count on Jackson to stick around the activity for years to come. He'll be marching drum corp for the first time this summer with the Colts and hopes to teach other groups in the future as well. Congratulations Jackson, we're so proud to support you in your musical journey! |
Jackson Hammond
Bass Drum, Eastside Fury Percussion Jackson Hammond looks great on paper: a hard-working teenager, wise beyond his 18 years and a bright future ahead of him. That paper would be 100% true. Jackson's love for music started in grade school, when he played the trombone for the first time. But it wasn't until years later that Jackson would pick up a pair of drumsticks with Farmington United Percussion Ensemble. That's where he learned the value of a solid work ethic and the importance of pushing yourself. Video: Eastside Fury performance from March 25, 2012. Check out Jackson on those bass runs!

2011 Scholarship Recipients:
Michelle Muller, Walled Lake Percussion, Legends Drum & Bugle Corp
From the moment we received her essay, we knew Michelle was a perfect fit for the Nick Saputo Scholarship. Her lengthy hours of practice, dedication to the arts, and her role as a leader made her a stand-out among the applicants. A member of Walled Lake Percussion since 2008, Michelle attributes her success in life primarily to her love for music and helping others attain their goals.
"I am certain that if I continue to strive for excellence and apply these principles to my life after high school, I will have just as much success, if not more, in any future endeavors." - Michelle, in her scholarship application.
During the summer of 2011, Michelle spent her first season participating in the Drum Corp activity with the Legends Drum & Bugle Corp. The youngest of seven children, Michelle will be the third in her family to concentrate on fine arts in college. She now attends Central Michigan University, studying bassoon performance. We are confident Michelle's talent, leadership and passion for performance will take her far in life. We send our congratulations to Michelle on this very special honor!

Clara Krivsky, Northcoast Academy
Clara marched in the Lakeland H.S. Marching Band and Huron Valley Percussion Indoor Drumline for four years. Nick was at her side as an instructor for all of them. Those years of practice and performance had a profound impact on her, teaching her the value of a strong work ethic, loyalty and discipline. In the words of her band director, Robert Green, "Clara was always prepared, always giving her best, and always pushing for improvement by never accepting anything but the best of herself and her line. Clara is the absolute best example I can think of when I imagine a product of Nick's guidance and teaching." During the 2010 fall season, Clara was asked to join the percussion staff at Lakeland H.S., a wish Nick made known before his passing. She also joined the staff at HVP, and spent the winter season on the cymbal line with Northcoast Academy. Her dream is to eventually become the first female to join the snare line at Northcoast. If Nick were here today, we're sure he would've hand picked Clara himself for such a fine honor. Congratulations, Clara!
Colin Bieszard, Huron Valley Percussion
"I know many people don't think just hitting drums with a bunch of other kids can change your life, but what they don't understand is that you form a bond with everyone around... and you become one big family." - Colin Bieszard, in his scholarship application.
As indicated by those words, Colin's love for the art is unmistakeable. He joined Huron Valley Percussion as a snare drummer, a position he didn't think he deserved, initially. But with Nick's encouragement and plenty of practice, Colin's love for winterline grew into something much bigger.
"Nick has moved me in many ways, but the one thing he taught me that I will never forget, is to do what you love to do, and do it to the best of your ability."
Colin plans to study music and percussion instruction in college, and hopes to eventually perform with Eastside Fury Percussion. Keep chasing your dreams Colin, you have a very bright future ahead!
